The UCSF Global Health Group’s Health Systems Initiative released its 2012 Clinical Social Franchising Compendium in May. This new and enhanced compendium - the fourth in the annual series - presents program descriptions and statistics on the now 52 clinical social franchises around the world, providing insights on this fast-growing private sector health services platform. The 2012 compendium features updated profiles with expanded sections on franchises’ quality assurance and operational research programs, and for the first time reports on DALYs averted, a globally accepted health impact metric, from 24 of the franchises.
There are programs from a number of new countries highlighted including Indonesia, Mozambique, the Philippines, Somaliland, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe and we see that the number of franchises offering family planning, MCH, HIV/AIDS and TB services increased over the last year. While franchise programs are now prevalent in Africa (30 programs) and Asia (18 programs), the majority of clients receiving healthcare from a franchise are in South Asia, due to the large scale of programs operating in that region. Worldwide, the clients being served by franchises are in both urban (55%) and rural areas (45%) and women, low income populations and men are the target populations of the majority of franchises.
The Clinical Social Franchising Compendium is published annually as part of the Global Health Group’s work to increase understanding and awareness of innovative private sector mechanisms for strengthening health systems, including a particular focus on social franchising. The Global Health Group convenes and serves as the secretariat for the global Social Franchising Community of Practice, and its Social Franchising Metrics Working Group. This global community came together for a ground-breaking First Global Conference on Social Franchising, held in Mombasa, Kenya in November 2011.
