The [World Health Organization](http://www.who.int/en/) (WHO) has released two documents covering the strategic use of anti-retrovirals (ARVs)in preventing HIV drug resistance. [The Strategic Use of Antiretrovirals To Help End the HIV Epidemic](http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/75184/1/9789241503921_eng.pdf), and the [WHO HIV Drug Resistance Report 2012](http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/75183/1/9789241503938_eng.pdf) summarize research and review guidelines regarding ARV usage, and expound on the need for program implementers and researchers to keep track, and take better records of ARV-resistance.
Providing a model of what public-private partnerships can truly accomplish, this week [PEPFAR](www.pepfar.gov/
), [USAID](www.usaid.gov/), [UNITAID](www.unitaid.eu/), and the [Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation](www.gatesfoundation.org/
) finalized an agreement to expand access to [GeneXpert](http://www.cepheid.com/systems-and-software/genexpert-system/), a diagnostic system that provides a two-hour rapid diagnosis of TB, TB/HIV co-infection and drug-resistant TB. This agreement will result in a 40 percent cost reduction of the system - a cost reduction that will be maintained until 2022.
