  • Bidan Delima: Accredited networks of midwives
    Networks of private health providers are a promising mechanism to expand the supply of quality health services as they achieve economies of scale in training, procurement and marketing, and allow for rapid expansion to increase coverage, improve financial access by standardized prices, and ensure quality and brand recognition. A partnership between USAID and the Indonesian Midwives Association is documented with recommendations for similar future projects.

  • LAMAT: Local Area Monitoring and Tracking of Maternal and Newborn Health in Indonesia
    LAMAT is a government-initiated system that facilitates the documenting, monitoring and tracking of Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) status in a given area. The reports generated from the software provide information about the antenatal care, obstetric complications, and the nutritional status of pregnant women and newborns in a given area - information needed by implementers to make informed decisions for precise planning. Since 2007, LAMAT has been introduced in more than 20 provinces in Indonesia with support from UNICEF.

  • Rachel's House: Hospice home care for children
    In 2006, Yayasan Rumah Rachel, or Rachel’s House pioneered Pediatric Hospice Home Care in Indonesia concentrating on treating children with terminal cancer, particularly those from poor families. In late 2009, RH expanded its care to include children with HIV. RH is one of the first organizations outside the public health care system that receives patient referrals from public hospitals.This innovative networking strategy (which includes public hospitals and healthcare clinics, local NGOs, and civil society actors) has allowed RH to successfully promote palliative care and extend its outreach to the poorest areas of Jakarta, Indonesia.

  • Mitrais Medical Suite (MMS) Hospital Information System, Vesalius at Eka Hospital, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) at RS Aisyiyah Klaten and at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital: Electronic Medical Records
    This paper documents the adoption process of three notable CIS/CDSS software programs - Mitrais Medical Suites (MMS), Vesalius, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) - across five Indonesian hospitals located in Bali, Banten, Jakarta, and Central Java Province. Each of the facilities reported on significant lessons learned in the adoption and implementation of CIS/CDSS, particularly in the progress leading to the implementation of drug interaction alerts.

  • HIV[e]Education and WHO Partograph Blended Learning: Implementation of Virtual and In-Person Methods in Improving Clinical Education
    Blended learning is an educational approach that combines traditional in-person learning methods with modern technology-based teaching tools. This paper explores two blended learning programs piloted in Indonesia, in which health providers had the opportunity to enhance their clinical knowledge through a process featuring remote learning: a program at Udayana University in Bali which focuses on educating skilled birth attendants (SBAs) to use World Health Organization (WHO) Partograph, and another program at the Health[e]Foundation (HeF) which focuses on educating a variety of providers on improving the delivery of HIV/AIDS care.

    In recent years, Indonesia has seen a rapid growth in the number of technological tools available, including innovative programs aimed at educating the public about health information through short message service (SMS). In order to better understand the potential of mHealth solutions in the Indonesian context, this case study explores two specific programs driven by the private, for-profit sector in Indonesia: Nokia Life Healthcare Services and SMS Info Obat Murah (SMS Affordable Drug Information).
