BMGF: Grand Challenges/Grand Challenges Explorations

Funding Type:
Thematic Focus:

The Grand Challenges in Global Health, an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, focuses on 14 major global health challenges with the aim of engaging creative minds across scientific disciplines — including those who have not traditionally taken part in health research — to work on solutions that could lead to breakthrough advances for those in the developing world.

Recognizing that great ideas can come from anywhere and anyone, in 2008 the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launched Grand Challenges Explorations, a $100 million program to encourage even bolder and less conventional solutions. Grand Challenge Explorations grants have already been awarded for innovative, early-stage projects to 340 researchers from 31 countries.
