Summary: 

ANDY seeks to rehabilitate disabled youth from underprivileged families through the provision of mobility aids and assistive devices such as wheelchairs, elbow crutches, white canes and braille.

Program goals/rationale: 

The majority of persons with disabilities are born to poor families already faced with the challenges of meeting their own basic needs, making it difficult for them to take care of their disabled child.

By providing the disabled youth with the assistive devices like elbow crutches, wheelchairs or white cane and braille machines, it will make it easier for them to go to school on their own and lead a normal life, as well as contribute to the development of the country. Through the program these children will learn that disability is not inability.

Key program components: 

ANDY seeks to create awareness on disability and healthcare, fitness and rehabilitation and fights to make these services accessible. ANDY successfully implemented a Behavior Change Communication Program, started counseling services, developed disability friendly teaching materials and a specialized VCT testing centre. Moreover, ANDY combines reproductive education with a sports program.

This project solves this problem by collecting or purchasing of the various mobility aids and assistive devices and identifying needy disabled youth who cannot afford to access them. The program also trains the beneficiaries on their usage before donating the devices to them.

The main objectives include:

  • Seeking greater involvement of youth with disabilities in development and decision making processes

  • Facilitating socio-economic empowerment of youth with disabilities through self-sustainable projects. E.g. small scale enterprises, micro-credit etc

  • Facilitating information and service provision in health, mobility, legal and rights issues for youth with disabilities

  • Encouraging and facilitating the integration of disability issues in mainstream development processes in the country

  • Acting as a liaison with other organizations to ensure that youth with disabilities gain access to resources, services and programs towards their life improvement.

A major challenge is the fight against (the stigma of) HIV and AIDS. Disabled youth represent a uniquely vulnerable group with regards to HIV/AIDS: being poor and unemployed makes disabled youth uniquely susceptible to rape, drug abuse, and unstable sexual partnerships. As a result, the prevalence rate among people with disabilities has continued to increase. To combat this, ANDY create a specialized VCT testing centre.
