Summary:

Adopt a Doctor alleviates the problem of high human resource turnover rates and lack of experienced physicians in health facilities by providing financial aid and other critical resources to help doctors continue serving the poorest communities.

Key program components:

In exchange for financial aid, doctors sign a contract committing to remain in their country and practice medicine for at least 7 years. Should a doctor leave before the 7 year term is over to pursue a more lucrative career in another country, he or she must return all funds received from the Adopt a Doctor program. Adopt a Doctor currently supports 2 doctors in Liberia, 5 in Mali, 7 in Malawi, and 3 in Sierra Leone. In Bamako, Mali, the program supports medical doctors at an HIV treatment facility.
