Summary: 

The Afya Milele Card provides affordable medical insurance cover to lower and middle class Kenyans.

Program goals/rationale: 

Most Lower and middle class Kenyans cannot afford expensive treatments for healthcare, especially chronic diseases and specialized HIV/AIDS treatment.

Key program components: 

The insurance provided by the Afya Milele card can cover up to 4 members of a family for as little as Kshs. 35/- per day. Subscribers can pay either monthly or annually and can pay their premiums using mobile money transfers, cash transfers or bank transfers.

The insurance provides a cover of between Kshs. 50,000 and Kshs. 300,000 for:

  • Maternity costs
  • All doctors' fees
  • Bed & meal charges
  • X-ray & laboratory costs
  • All prescribed drugs & dressing
  • Intensive care unit (ICU) charges
  • High dependency unity (HDU) charges
  • Treatment of chronic & pre-existing medical conditions
  • HIV & AIDS

One must be a registered and contributing member of National Hospital Insurance Fund to enroll.
