Afya Salama

last updated Feb 13, 2012

Overview

Legal Status:
Year Launched:
2012
Stage:
Pilot/startup stage
Summary:

Afya Salama will create hi-tech health kiosks in low-income communities in Kenya. The kiosks will focus on providing healthcare that does not require the large infrastructure and salary expenses needed for hospitals and clinics. Their proximity to households will lower physical and behavioral barriers to consumers of care by integrating the ability to access health information and treatment into a daily routine.

Key program components:

The kiosks will use new smart medical technologies to deliver primary and antenatal healthcare. They will be run by community health workers trained to act as a first point of contact, provide information and use screening and diagnostic equipment linked to local clinics. The kiosks will also be mini-pharmacies, selling quality drugs, family planning and hygiene products. There will be a fee for services, and bundled packages and payment plans will both promote care and make it more affordable.
