Summary:

Al-Shifa Trust is a not-for-profit and non-government entity that seeks to provide high quality ophthalmology (eye care) diagnostic and treatment services to the general population, especially to the needy and less affluent portions of society, through a chain of specialty eye care hospitals.

Key program components:

The Trust operates a chain of hospitals in four different locations in Pakistan: Muzaffarabad, Rawalpindi, Kohat, Sukkur. Program components include a comprehensive outreach program (whereby strategies of community ophthalmology are employed for screening and identifying patients with eye diseases from far flung areas), provision of comprehensive eye disease diagnosis and treatment facilities at four different state of the art hospitals, and provision of high quality ophthalmology training and education facilities for doctors, paramedics, and nurses through the Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology. The hospital uses cross subsidization to finance care for those not able to pay. Till date, about 70% of total patients (need-based) have been treated free of cost.
