Summary: 

AngloGold Ashanti delivers sustainable health care solutions to the communities in which it operates. Its integrated integrated HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis control programmes in South Africa won three awards in the second annual ABSA Healthcare Initiative Awards held in August 200, a part of the Pan African Health Congress.

Program goals/rationale: 

AngloGold Ashanti's HIV/AIDS program was created to address an estimated 30% prevalence of HIV/AIDS among employees at the South African operations (figure as of 2007). The key objectives of the group's HIV/AIDS program are to minimize the risk of HIV/AIDS on the company and its employees by reducing and ultimately eliminating new infections, efficiently managing those infected and supporting those with advanced AIDS.

Key program components: 

The program has the following key components:

  • Prevention of HIV by means of various workplace initiatives, including voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). Assuming single testing, around 102% of the South African workforce were tested in 2007 (2006: 75%).
  • Caring for HIV patients through treatment program, which involve the clinical care of those infected by the virus, including the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART is available to all employees at all company operations in Africa, either directly from company facilities, through company-sponsored or -funded facilities, or from state facilities.
  • Supporting those affected by AIDS, including separation from the company where necessary and palliative care, as well as providing support for various community initiatives.

Total expenditure on the company’s HIV/AIDS program in South Africa amounted to approximately R25.2 million ($3.6 million) in 2007.
