Summary: 

APRENDE (The Association for the Prevention of Undesired Pregnancies) is a non-profit organization which began their activities in Bolivia in 2005 and forms part of the program Pro Salud Fundacion Interamericana (The Inter-American Pro Health Foundation).

Program goals/rationale: 

APRENDE's objective is to “foster in Bolivian people a preventative culture which will contribute to responsible sexual behavior, which is healthy and free of risk, through diverse modes of education”. As such, health education is APRENDE’s institutional specialty.

Key program components: 

APRENDE achieve its goals through the following strategies:

Health Education: The Sexual Reproductive Health Trainers Program is made up of a team of trainers who instruct health professionals, university students, members of the armed forces, police officers, neighborhood associations and others regarding sexual and reproductive rights, prevention of STIs, contraceptives, and sexual violence. The educative services are carried out in seminars and courses. These programs are offered for free.

Information Hotline: APRENDE offers an information line (800-10-8662), an automatic, free, anonymous and confidential service, which provides information about alternative contraception methods and operates 365 days a year. Information, education and communication materials about sexual and reproductive health are distributed free-of-charge through national pharmacy networks, educational institutions, fairs, markets, etc.

Dedicated Resource Website: The web page utilized by APRENDE (www.aprendeaprevenir.com.bo) is a virtual space where youth are able to access up-to-date information regarding sexual and reproductive health. The site includes a library containing updated documents from the Organizacion Panamericana de Salud (The Panamerican Health Association), a space for frequently asked questions and answers regarding sexual and reproductive health, a blog, an open forum for user questions to which other users can respond (although responses are monitored and the APRENDE’s medical team also responds), informational videos, and games related to sexual and reproductive health.

APRENDE maintains agreements and alliances with the municipal government of La Paz to carry out integrated activities and health campaigns as well as with health department services, the army, the national police, and the public university of San Andres. The organization also maintains partnerships with private organisms such as Marie Stopes International, Red de Jóvenes Latinoamericanos Unidos en Respuesta al VIH/SIDA (Latin American youth network United in Response to HIV/AIDS), Aldeas Infantiles SOS (SOS Youth Villages), and the Centro de Información y Desarrollo de la Mujer (Women’s Development and Information Center). APRENDE comprises an interdisciplinary team of 15 professionals (doctors, psychologists, social workers, communication specialists) who work in the cities of La Paz, and, through alliances, in Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Those working in La Paz also cover the cities of Oruro and Chuquisaca.

In the five years since the organization’s inception it has reached a total of 413,684 beneficiaries.
