Summary:

Partners in Development, in collaboration with faith based organizations (FBOs), has developed "Be Alert" -- an innovative educational program and financing mechanism to reduce maternal mortality in Ghana.

Key program components:

Through this initiative, Partners in Development trains peer educators who are drawn from the church membership. These peer educators, in turn, go to branches of the church to train other volunteers and establish similar systems at the branch levels.

Additionally, the church enters into contractual arrangement with local clinics and maternity homes so that they would accept and provide maternal and delivery services to pregnant women belonging to the church. Youth members of the church are also organized for voluntary blood donations. The blood obtained from the donors is kept at affiliated blood banks so that it will be readily available if a pregnant women of the church is ever in need of it.

The FBO (e.g. Global Evangelical Church) raises funds for running the program from financial contributions made to an Emergency Health Fund, created by the church to ensure the welfare of its members. Church members voluntarily contribute at least 10 Pesewas (about 7 cents) a month to the fund in order to finance the Be Alert initiative.
