Summary: 

The Cancer Institute (WIA) hs been created to help individuals across all India combat cancer regardless of their ability to pay.

Key program components: 

Since inception, the Institute has provided high quality diagnostic and therapeautic oncology to the poorest populations in India. Consistently over the years, the Institute has sought and obtained domestic and international support to set-up state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of cancer, as well as rehabilitation.The Institute is spread over 9 acres in Chennai, South India. The hospital houses 423 beds of which 297 are free. Over 125,000 patients are seen annually. They are drawn from all over India, parts of South and South East Asia. Over 66% of them are indigent and are treated free of charge.

Program history: 

The Institute was founded in 1954 by Dr. S. Muthulakshmi Reddy, the first woman in India to graduate in medicine. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956 in recognition of her services to the nation.
