Summary
Care With Love is an employment training and placement program for home healthcare workers in Egypt.Program goals
Egypt has recently experienced socioeconomic changes that affected the structure of urban families. This created new needs, particularly in health care for the elderly and an increasing number of individuals that are in need of short or long term non-hospital health care. Working family members are rarely available, have the time, or the necessary skills to provide the required care at home. This has resulted in a need for trained home health care providers (HHCP).
Key program components
The need for trained healthcare workers was translated into a program that would improve the living conditions of those in need for short or long term home health care by providing them with well trained and compassionate home health care providers that work through a reliable and accountable system. There were many barriers to such a program in the community, and a partnership between three reputable organizations in the community was formed to: 1) Give credibility and legality to the program, 2) Provide legitimate employment opportunities for the graduates as home health care providers 3) Provide dependable and trustworthy services to the community. Trainees are recruited from communities where there are large numbers of unemployed young people. Selection of students is a painstaking process. Capable young men and women of good disposition (17-35 years of age) that can fluently read and write must be of sound mind and able body to be able to enter the training program. The training curriculum is a balanced mixture of theory in the class room, lab training where the trainees are coached to acquire and practice needed basic skills, and practical field experience at health institutions where they apply what they learned and can gain confidence and hands-on experience. The training course is 4 months long. Care with Love began as a training program developed in partnership with three organizations: the Center for Geriatric Services (a not-for-profit orgnization of the Synod of the Nile in partnership with the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services), an NGO, and Asalam Hospital in Mohandessin.
