Summary:

The Clinical Patient Administration Kit (CliniPAK) is a portable, durable, self-contained "clinic in a box" that operates on a solar panel. Vecna Cares' CliniPAK units are rugged touch-screen laptops loaded with Vecna Technologies' user–friendly healthcare IT software. These clinician–facing units are developed specifically for supporting remote and rural communities with healthcare software solutions for improved data capture, longitudinal patient care, and reporting capabilities.

Key program components:

The CliniPAK provides diagnosis guidance to the CHWs based on patient's symptoms and medication guidance based on primary diagnosis. It's also equipped with a report module that is currently used to report aggregate infectious disease data to the Kenyan government. This reporting capability has eliminated the need to shutdown the clinics for a day just to create the infectious disease report.

TheCliniPAK automates and standaradizes primary health care workflows and data collection, health assessment forms and patient records in a suitcase. It contains a solar powered touch screen laptop and other health assessment tools that allows a nurse or a midwife to do a high quality assessment of patients in a rural setting and to create a linked patient record (and fingerprint ID). CliniPAK contains a nascent electronic health record system, automated patient registration, symptoms & vitals capture, clinical triage, assessment and diagnosis & treatment support.

The team modified an Open Data Kit (ODK) Collect, an open-source tool for mobile data collection and loaded it onto an Android smartphone that the Community Health Workers (CHWs) carry when visiting patients. The completed surveys are then uploaded to a Vecna-hosted server, where the data is available for download and reporting. This has been a vast improvement over the paper and pen survey collection method.

Vecna Cares upgraded the CliniPAK software at Enoosaen and Olereko clinics with new features for improved patient outreach, data capture and reporting capabilities. These upgrades included patient cell phone number capture for automated alerts. This feature allows clinicians to schedule automatic text message reminders for patients receiving ongoing treatment and for mothers requiring post-natal care for themselves and their infants.

Program history:

The team (Vecna Cares and Click Health) is working to outfit 15 new clinics in the Trans Mara District in Kenya.
