Key program components:

Coming Out Again uses drama to explore lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) life in South Africa, while informing audiences on issues affecting their health as well as their human and legal rights. The programme was launched in 2005 with a play entitled Coming Out Again. The play involved a group of young LGBT artists and activists affected by HIV/AIDS telling their own stories and experiences. The play was workshopped with the artists, who initially performed it in community venues in Johannesburg, and at a touring LGBT film festival in Ermelo, Mpumalanga province. In 2006, the show went on a national tour, playing at mainstage and community venues in Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Cape Town. The audiences were mainly made up of young, black LGBT people living in low income urban or township areas. The age range was between 18 – 35.

Following the tour, an audio adaptation of the play was recorded and produced for use by radio stations and LGBT organisations. In addition, two comic books inspired by the experiences shared in the play were developed. One was designed for deaf and hearing-impaired audiences as one of the cast members was a young deaf man living with HIV - a group that is generally not reached by the majority of HIV-prevention and awareness campaigns.
