Summary:

La Corporación para la Prevención de Embarazos No Deseados (The Corporation for the Prevention of Unwanted Pregnancy, or COPPRENDE) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization and a member of the Inter-American Pro-Health Network.

Program goals/rationale:

The institution’s principal objectives include the provision of information regarding the prevention of unwanted pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS; providing information and access to contraceptive methods, as well as also promoting abstinence and the postponement of sexual activity; and facilitating access to health services specializing in sexual and reproductive health.

Key program components:

Since 2004 COPPRENDE has developed and carried out several specific sexual and reproductive health programs. Over time they have expanded their reach and presence in Quito and Guayaquil. Examples of these programs include the following:

Educational Program: The program is directed towards the adolescent and youth population found in middle and secondary schools. It works to create a preventative culture in terms of sexual and reproductive health by providing information and prevention alternatives within a human rights-based context through the use of diverse intervention methods.

Community Program: The goal is to provide information regarding usage and access to modern contraceptive methods in order to foster a prevention-based sexual and reproductive health culture within the objective population through the use of discussions, workshops, conferences, health fairs, and panels. It is primarily directed towards healthcare providers (originating from both public and private health institutions), social organizations, associations, committees, municipal organizations, and others.

COPPRENDE maintains virtual and telephonic lines of communication which permit adolescents, youth, and adults to access clear, objective, truthful, and scientific information regarding various topics related to sexual and reproductive health. Their phone line can be reached free-of-charge at 1-800 PREVEN (773836). It is anonymous, confidential, and can be accessed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It contains automated information regarding the following topics: emergency and regular contraceptive pills, birth control for males, sexual and reproductive rights, gender, contraceptive methods (hormonal, emergency, natural, etc), sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS. COPPRENDE’s virtual options include a blog (www.asuntode2.blogspot.com) where users can find information regarding the corporation’s services and activities. They also provide sexual and reproductive health information through the use of social networks and their webpage (www.plenasexualidad.com).

Program history:

COPPRENDRE was founded in 2003 in order to contribute to the improvement of sexual and reproductive health in Ecuador.
