Summary:

The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with B. Braun, a healthcare provider from Germany, has signed an MoU to open 11 dialysis centres across Andhra Pradesh.

Program goals/rationale:

The objective of this public private partnership is to serve 1000 patients per month with help of 111 dialysis machines and replicate the model in other parts of the country.

Key program components:

The Government of Andhra Pradesh provides has been providing basic medical treatment at no cost to patients living below povery line through the Aarogyasri health insurance scheme. It was realized that a significant number of BPL patients needed dialysis services and many state-run hospitals had little or no capacity to perform dialysis. To address this gap in services, a German healthcare company called B, Braun was selected to establish and operate dialysis centers in eleven tertiary care state-run hospitals on a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis for a period of seven years. The selection was done through a quality based competetive selection process.

Eleven dialysis centres have been set up in teaching hospitals and tertiary care centers in Hyderabad, Tirupati, Kurnool, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam and Guntur, Srikakulam, Anantapur and Vijayawada. Most of the patients who use these facilities are Aarogyasri beneficiaries. Services are free to patients and the cost of treatment per patient (1080 rupees, about USD 23) is paid by government to B. Braun.
