SummaryE-counseling PULIH (Healing E-counseling) was launched by the PULIH Foundation in 2004. Part of the broader initiatives of the PULIH Foundation, the E-counseling program improves the provision of direct psychological counseling services at no cost to the community.
In Indonesia, high cost and stigma are among the major barriers to accessing adequate mental health services. Many individuals are reluctant to seek help for their mental health conditions through hospitals or other providers due to embarrassment, high cost, or simply because they do not know where they should go for help. The increasing availability of information and communication technology enables people to connect at no cost and eliminates the barriers presented by distance. In addition, the number of internet and cell phone users in Indonesia remains high and continues to grow rapidly. By providing the e-counseling services, PULIH foundation is better able to assist those seeking mental health services.
Key program components
The E-counseling program allows clients to reach live psychologists by emails, text and live chats such as Yahoo Messenger. For those who are not tech-savvy and do not own yahoo accounts, there are ready applications on PULIH’s website so the clients can access the services through the website. Users from all ages and backgrounds can chat or exchange emails with live psychologists five working days per week. The program generally focuses on assisting clients with traumatic experiences such as post disaster trauma and family oriented issues, but does not limit its services to a specific condition. The program also counsels clients on the psychological effects of a broad range of issues, except those relating to work related topics, studying difficulties, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, special rehabilitation for children, and schizophrenia.
