The electronic Logistics Management Information System (eLMIS) is a revolutionary and cost-effective system of health data management that ensures greater commodity security and better health outcomes for the people of Zambia and Tanzania.Program goals
Health programs rely on supply chains for adequate quantities and quality of health products for their patients. To meet patient demand and improve health outcomes, Zambia, in collaboration with Tanzania, built the electronic logistics management information system (eLMIS) that includes most major health programs in the country. eLMIS links health facilities with the central store to collect and distribute logistics data in real time. Knowing which medicines are used and which medicines are required helps supply chain managers provide continuity of supply for patients.
Key program components
Pioneered by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health in Zambia, in partnership with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Supply Chain Management System (SCMS), and the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT, this breakthrough for the Zambian and Tanzanian health systems will enable a transition from a paper-based system of data management to an electronic format which will foster better, faster, and more accurate reporting of supply chain data, reduce stockouts of health commodities, and ultimately provide better access to medicines to improve health outcomes. Given that the eLMIS has been built on an open source platform, any country in need will be able to easily adapt this state of the art automated system to its requirements.
