Summary
ERC-eye care center provides low-cost, high-quality eye care and surgical procedures for those at the bottom of the pyramid.Program goals
ERC aims to provide inclusive, affordable, service oriented, yet sustainable eye care to the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) and marginalized populations. They propose to expand across the region in the "hub & spoke" model to make eye care accessible to the marginalized rural populations who have to travel long distances to access costly eye care in towns & cities.
Key program components
1. Affordable eye care with packages to suit even the poorest 2. Accessible care by way of service in a net worked manner via the "hub & spoke" model 3. Service orientation with stress on quality and a customer service mentality **Revenue sources:** 1. Consultation fee: $1 consultations 2. Pharmacy outlet 3. Optical Retail: Prices start at $2 4. Diagnostic tests 5. Surgical services including cataract surgery – Proposed surgical practices start at $60 Their second center will save transportation time and money for the 50,000+ people residing there who need to access basic eye care. That center is modeled as a basic "vision center" and will be run by trained optometrists. ERC has been running a single center in Jorhat since June 2011 and now plans to offer similar services across underserved areas of the region, in addition to upgrading to include surgical services. From November 1st, 2012 they opened their second center, 35 km from their first location; serving in a rural area, which has no eye care service whatsoever.
