An Identification of OVCs (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) where 700 households have been identified in all YWCA Rwanda covered districts and they have been inserted into the usual working groups of OVCs. They are visited and advised regularly in their daily lives
Summary: 

The YWCA-Rwandan program "Giving Hope"supports and cares for the OVCs in Rwanda rural areas. The program also provides for PLWA and their families.

Program goals/rationale: 

YWCA Rwanda has identified and supported nearly 15,000 orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). The YWCA program Gives Hope aims to protect the rights of and to provide support to orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS so that they may be empowered to manage their own well being and the stability of their families, as well as participate in the social and economic development of their communities.

Key program components: 

The project focuses on empowering vulnerable young people by giving them the means to gain new skills through education such as:

  1. Funding for formal education
  2. Informal education in HIV/AIDs prevention, farming, health and hygiene, child care and family planning
  3. Homes for the homeless
  4. Facilitated OVC support groups where learning and skills are shared
  5. Economic support

The aim of the Giving Hope program is to complement existing Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) care and support programs with an empowerment methodology which focuses' upon building the capacities of young people who have become the caregivers of their families (e.g. HIV+ parents, elderly grandparents, and younger siblings).Their priority is to move towards a point of planned engagement so that the young people they help may, over time, run many aspects of the program themselves.

The programs specific objectives are: 1. Increase local attention to the growing number and needs of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS 2. Increase support for self-empowerment of children affected by HIV/AIDS 3. Reduce HIV/AIDS transmission and promote child protection through Youth Clubs 4. Encourage individual Christian faith and spiritual growth of OVC .

Program history: 

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Rwanda is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation that works at the grass roots level. It is a membership organization for women and young girls. It was established in Rwanda in February 1995, following the genocide and in response to the rising concern for the many widows and children left in its wake.

YWCA Rwanda was affiliated to the World Young Women’s Christian Association (World YWCA) based in Geneva in 1999. World YWCA is a global movement created in 1855 and working in 125 countries across the world with more than 25 millions of members
