SummaryGlicOnLine is a software that runs on simple mobile phones and internet access devices and is controlled by physicians through the internet, that helps patients with Diabetes log blood sugar levels, count carbohydrates and calculate insulin doses.
The company's mission is to improve the quality of life of patients with diabetes.
Key program components
Dr Karla Mello, PhD, one of the partners of GlicOnLine, is a specialist in Endocrinology and Metabolism, and herself has diabetes. Her method aims to give diabetic patients a normal lifestyle. In 2002, Floro Dória, created a software that allowed for a quicker calculation of insulin dosage. The goal of this automation was to reduce barriers such as difficulty calculating proportions/insulin amounts and, therefore, increase the number of users who take advantage of this technology. The information collected by the software is input into an electronic system that allows for simple calculation of insulin dosage. Clients have an online profile registered by their doctors, and can, at any given time, log into the system to determine their glycemic index, calculate nutrients intake, and choose food from a menu. The program calculates carbohydrates and fat content, and indicates back the amount of insulin that must be administered. The software allows doctors to monitor their patients online and change treatment parameters whenever necessary. Any prescription changes are automatically sent to the patients mobile phone. GlicOnLine was incorporated in 2004, and received funding from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo) to incubate the business, develop the software. Gliconline was finally launched in August of 2009. GlicOnLine has reached over 2500 patients as of early June 2011 and 250 doctors, who are now applying intensive insulin therapy safely.
