Summary: 

Happy Health Insurance Scheme Clinic offers community healthcare services to community members who are members in the Happy Health Insurance Scheme, as well as to non members. The clinic treats all community members and provides general healthcare services.

Program goals/rationale: 

To have healthy people in the community and homes by empowering them with affordable means of accessing medical treatment as a basis for sustainable good health.

Key program components: 

The insurance provided by Happy Health Insurance Scheme (HHIS) targets individual persons, families, schools, institutions, universities, companies, associations, clubs, church institutes and congregations, religious groups, nurseries and kindergartens. The membership fee is Shs. 6,000/= and it is paid quarterly for each member and termly for students.

Community members who are members in the health insurance scheme, as well as those who are not members, can receive general medical services at the Happy Health Insurance Scheme Clinic, such as diagnosis and treatment of malaria and STDs, HIV/AIDS testing, health education, maternal care and deliveries, antenatal and postnatal care, immunizations, family planning, and nutrition counseling.

The Happy Health Youth Group conducts outreach programs in schools, villages and churches, focusing on sensitizing and mobilizing communities around HIV/AIDS and malaria issues through drama activities like songs and plays.

Program history: 

Located in Nyakihanga village, Ntungamo Municipality, Ntungamo district, Uganda, Happy Health Insurance Scheme Clinic is the only and first clinic in Ntungamo District, Uganda to provide healthcare services using a community based health insurance model. Since 2008 the clinic has become a popular place for members and non members to receive medical services in a safe and discreet setting without segregation based on tribe, religion, age, income level, gender, nationality and political affiliation.

The Happy Health Insurance Scheme has a membership of over 1000 members, with its numbers increasing every day.
