Summary:

The Heberden Telemedicine System allows doctors at faith-based hospitals in developing countries to consult with doctors in the US, Israel, and Europe. The system also incorporates a cloud-based electronic medical records system.

Key program components:

The Heberden Telemedicine Foundation is currently working with 5 faith-based hospitals in 4 countries. In order to work with Heberden a hospital must have an internet connection and at least one working computer. Heberden will then provide them with an iPad (they could purchase more if they wish), access to their cloud-based electronic medical records (EMR) system and virtual access to foreign doctors for advice on patient consultations. Heberden also assists in trainings to help the staff learn how to use the iPad and the EMR and to set up any necessary servers or other technical work.

Tele-consultations
Using simple, off-the-shelf applications (such as GoToMeeting), Heberden provides access to advice from doctors from highly-trained doctors in the US and Israel (and Europe by Spring 2012) who volunteer their time. With this system, a doctor in Africa can generally have a foreign-doctor on the line within an hour. Heberden also lets these doctors with other virtual trainings, including the chance to join their Grand Rounds a virtual weekly conversation where doctors from all over the world discuss challenging cases that they are facing.

Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
Heberden has developed HarmoniMD, a cloud-based EMR system that can be adjusted to match the bandwidth of the hospital using it. With this system, a doctor can easily: upload a patients data, track diseases across a region or country, and look up what medications are effective in specific situations.

Program history:

The Heberden Telemedicine Foundation grew out of OffSiteCare, a US-focused, for-profit organization. It hopes to expand the countries in which it works to: Philippines (January 2012), India (Feb. 2012), Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia.
