Summary: 

Higa Ubeho is a community-based care and support program that provides health, nutritional, educational, and economic support to over 70,000 vulnerable Rwandan families.

Program goals/rationale: 

Higa Ubeho program works to increase families’ access to quality health and social services; improve household response to health and financial obstacles through economic, nutritional and educational support; and strengthen local government and civil society capacity to provide quality health and social services to those in need.

Key program components: 

Higa Ubeho program provide a range of community-based care and support services to children and their families which includes (among others):

  • Counseling which is offered through holiday camps
  • Provision of school dues and social support to persons living with HIV/AIDS
  • Creating farmer field schools where farmers and their families learn from one another how to increase their crop yields and to prepare nutritious food
  • Improving both civil society and district officials’ abilities to monitor and manage social services
Program history: 

Higa Ubeho, which is from the local dialect Kinyarwanda (it means ‘Be Determined and Live’) is a USAID/ PEPFAR funded family focused program that builds on the successes of the Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Program (CHAMP). The program works are aimed at promoting sustainable responses to health, economic and social challenges that often affect the orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) and their families.
