Summary:

A Cho Ray Hospital survey shows that the average number of rehabilitation staff is one physical therapist per 108 beds. Only 10 percent of cardiovascular accident and head trauma patients received rehabilitation treatment after returning home. Therefore, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a three-year deal to help Ho Chi Minh City’s Cho Ray Hospital improve medical rehabilitation services.

Key program components:

Under the project, JICA will provide technical assistance to improve Cho Ray Hospital's rehabilitation services for traumatic brain injuries and cardiovascular accidents and transfer knowledge and techniques to other hospitals in southern Vietnam.

The project will also develop a handbook on rehabilitation for patients and their families guiding continued rehabilitation procedures after a patient's discharge from a hospital.

The project follows the successful completion of the "Supporting people with disabilities" project implemented in Cho Ray Hospital in 2005-08 with financial support from JICA and collaboration with Japan Social Welfare University.
