Summary:

Instituto PROVE was created by Dr Marcelo Mello, psychiatrist and professor at the School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp-Federal University of São Paulo), to offer free psychiatric treatment to victims of violence in the city of São Paulo.

Key program components:

Individuals who go through traumatic experiences do not realize they could have psychological trauma. The Brazilian public healthcare system does not specifically target this part of the population. The government finances the Centros de Atenção Psicossocial (CAPS- Centers for Psycho-social Attention) targeting emergency patients and severe disorders, but not violence victims.

The Institute treats Posttraumatic Stress Disorder at patients who witnessed or were victims of violence. Treatment includes targeted and specific psychotherapy sessions, as well as antidepressant, anti-anxiety and humor balancing medicines.

Instituto PROVE was the first organization to target violence victims, and has been a reference to other institutions in Brazil and abroad. The Institute is supported and financed by the Unifesp. The institute also receives funding from Instituto Rukha, and private donors.
