Summary:

Lakbay Buhay Kalusugan (LBK) is a mobile health caravan specifically traveling to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas of the Philippines. In addition to providing maternal and child health focused consultations and examinations, the caravan offers interactive health promotion activities to educate the people about basic health care.

Program goals/rationale:

Due to geographical distance, some areas in the Philippines cannot be reached by any form of medical service. The poor living and working conditions in the outskirts impedes the private sector and health workers to sustain their stay in these areas. Thus, LBK aims to bring health information and reach the most disadvantaged people in far-flung places through a mobile health clinic.

Key program components:

This project was launched in line with the Aquino Health Agenda to provide universal access to health care with the objective of delivering basic health services to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) targeting pregnant women and children.

The LBK Caravan is a mobile clinic which provides services such as maternal and child health care and counseling services. For 2011, ten provinces were selected as "stops" for the caravan. For every stop, the caravan offers interactive health exhibits, videos, concerts, storytelling sessions, and other fun activities with the intention of educating people about basic health care.

Program history:

This is a DOH-led initiative with technical assistance from Health Promotion and Communication Project (HealthPRO) of the USAID. This is one of the pilot programs of the DOH in line with the administration’s campaign for universal health coverage through public-private partnership. Victory Liner Bus Lines donated the bus that serves as the mobile clinic; OMF Literature provided the books for story telling sessions. Various media outfits provided the publicity that is needed to inform the target beneficiaries as well as to attract potential donors for the succeeding years.
