Summary:

The Medical Social Services Project at Mayo Hospital Lahore is designed to help individual medical patients receive timely medical treatment in a manner that also addresses the social aspects of the disease. The project provides individualized financial and moral support to patients on the basis of his or her socio-economic background.

Key program components:

The project is implemented through dedicated medico-social officers (in collaboration with concerned doctors) who assess the financial and psychological conditions of the individual patients. Once the need is determined, support is provided in the form of subsidized medical treatment and provision of medicines and other financial support mechanisms.

The crux of the project is the linkage which is developed between the doctor and the patient through the medical social officers. Such an association is ultimately helpful in ensuring that the patient receives proper treatment during the visit and follows through with the appropriate rehabilitation procedures.

The project operates by mobilizing philanthropic resources made available through a government charity (Pakistan Baitul Mal, Zakat organizations) as well as private philanthropy. A yearly grant of Pakistani Rupees 1,300,0000 (approximately US $ 15,000) is being provided for general patients, as well as Rs.1,000,0000 (approximately US $12,000) for urology patients.
