Summary:

MediSmart is a health information system that uses smart cards to capture a patient's complete electronic health record (EHR).

Key program components:

Medismart includes a plastic patient card, the size of a credit card, which embeds a microprocessor – or computer chip. It can capture the patient’s complete electronic health record (EHR) - personal and biometric identity; emergency contact information; medical history, current medical conditions and treatments; benefit status/insurance information; and has up to 15 other applications. In addition, MediSmart provides credentialing and authentication through similar cards for doctors and administrators. MediSmart adds optional fingerprint readers that can better identify patients and offers PIN-enabled contactless readers.

Cards are issued to all members (employees and their dependants) with a biometrically controlled smart card, and benefits are registered. Managers, doctors and service providers receive a designated smart card reader and software so that all encounters are transmitted to scheme case managers as they happen - doing this reduces administration costs, call center dependency, and unmanaged private reimbursements.
