Summary:

MobiMedicine utilizes both the mobile and web ecosystems to interact with patients and general medical practitioners to ensure that people from all walks of life get desired medical services from the mobile phone.

Program goals/rationale:

This system aims to solve the issues surrounding access to healthcare in developing countries where the nearest health center is in another district. By creating a seamless mobile based communication facility between health providers and patients, it will greatly improve the potential to communicate vital information, both to and from the patient.

The overall goal is thus to form working partnerships that make result oriented health provision available across the country, increasing its accessibility and affordability to the general population.

Key program components:

MobiMedicine will facilitate patient symptoms recorded by community health workers to be transmitted in real time to medical staff, enabling the latter to make an immediate response. It will be used as an information channel to help create better awareness of diseases like HIV/AIDS and TB. Patients will be reminded to take their drugs, and when repeat prescriptions are due.

Appointment reminders will also be available to ensure that patients do not forget to see their doctor at their agreed time. Medical staff will also be equally reminded of appointment due well in advance. The system will also allow ease of interaction and make medical service provisions accessible in an affordable manner.

Chemist shops in the location where the patient is coming from will be informed of the prescription in real-time allowing them to make it ready for the patient as soon as they get to the shop. It is important to note that the supply chain will be greatly improved as drugs when dispensed will concurrently notify medical suppliers so that chemist shops do not run out of stock. Medical emergency operators will also be informed immediately when their service is required.
