Summary:

Modhumita Project is the USAID supported project for HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh for most at risk population.

Program goals/rationale:

The program's overarching objective is to support an effective HIV prevention strategy through improved prevention, care, and treatment services for most-at-risk populations (MARPs), and a strengthened national response.

Key program components:

The program seeks to achieve the following results:

  • Increased and sustained use of high-impact HIV prevention, care, and treatment services by MARPs through high-quality, evidence-based, and holistic program approaches.

  • Strengthened government leadership, multi-level coordination and use of data for decision-making, knowledge, and advocacy to support HIV prevention efforts, and effective programming for MARPs

The priorities of the Modhumita project are to increase the commitment and capacity of the Government of Bangladesh and local NGOs to provide appropriate, cost-effective, targeted interventions, including clinical services for MARPs, and strengthened service delivery. HIV programming will be integrated with other programs (tuberculosis, family planning, reproductive health, and primary healthcare information and services) and Modhumita will help build a supportive environment to strengthen HIV prevention services, including efforts to reduce violence, stigma, and discrimination associated with HIV and membership in a most-at-risk group.

FHI focuses on people most vulnerable to HIV by promoting condoms, training peer educators and emphasizing the management of sexually transmitted diseases. Through the peer education programs, a select group of commercial sex workers receive training on HIV/AIDS prevention. In addition to helping curb the spread of AIDS, the peer education programs builds the self-esteem of those who once had little pride or hope for their future.
