Summary:

mothers2mothers is an NGO that helps to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV through an effective, sustainable model of care.

Key program components:

While there are efficacious medical interventions to prevent mother to child transmission during pregnancy and nursing, women in public clinics do not always have access to the regimens. This program employs mothers living with HIV to mentor HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers in health facilities. They work side-by-side with doctors and nurses, as paid members of the health care team, supporting and educating women about how to take care of themselves and their babies. The mothers employed by mothers2mothers come from the communities in which they work. They help provide a solution to the lack of health care providers in Africa. They also help to combat stigma and empower and guide other women, making them aware of treatments and services that are available, saving lives.

The mothers2mothers program is active in seven countries, at 609 sites, employing 1519 HIV-positive women. mothers2mothers enrolled about 300,000 unique HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers in 2010. That is 20 percent of the world’s population of HIV-positive pregnant women.

Program history:

mothers2mothers programs in Rwanda and Zambia, funded by USAID's New Partner's Initiative (NPI), closed in May 2011 and January 2012 respectively after successful completion of the project objectives.
