Summary:

NICE Foundation is dedicated to improving maternal health and combating infant & child mortality. The Foundation strives to provide quality health care to the poorest and most neglected in Indian society through its hospital and school-based services, as well as the rural child health program.

Key program components:

The Foundation uses three key interventions to accomplish its goals:

Institute of Newborn Care, Hyderabad: Established for high-end, level-III (tertiary) neonatal care that is affordable to the poorest of the poor, the NICE Institute (120 bed institution) endeavors to:

  • Provide exceptional clinical care to its patients irrespective of the ability to pay
  • Train the future generation of newborn specialists, scientists and paramedics.
  • Improve understanding of newborn diseases and develop new cures using research tools and innovative approaches
NICE cross-subsidizes between its wealthier and poorer clients, offering more comfortable waiting areas and better hospital rooms to those who are able to pay, while maintaining simpler accommodations for the poor.

Tribal RCH: With respect to mothers and infants in tribal areas, NICE strives to:

  • Reduce the burden of pregnancy and childbirth through basic care and support during ante/post natal care, safe delivery and under-five childcare.
  • Promote primary immunization to children against ten vaccine preventable diseases by the age of one year.
  • Increase awareness among mothers and the community about health and nutrition related to safe motherhood and child survival.

School Health Program: Realizing that healthcare could be an effective tool to promote schooling, NICE, with support from Naandi Foundation (another sister NGO), has initiated a healthcare plan for children in government schools of Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. The program aims to:

  • Provide quality health services from common cold to cardiac surgery to needy and deserving children in government schools, with absolutely no cost to their families
  • Encourage children to continue education in schools
  • Address the generic low-energy index of children, the primary reason for frequent bouts of absenteeism
