Nyamwegabira Community Based Health Insurance Scheme (NCBHIS) is a community health insurance program that covers inpatient and outpatient care at Nyamwegabira Health Unit 3.

Key program components: 

This scheme covers all inpatient and outpatient services available at Nyamwegabira Health Unit 3. Its monthly premium totals Ug.shs 300 (US$ 0.125), payable per family member, per household, for 6 months. Payment is made through registered groups; scheme managers must acknowledging receipts. Co-payments are made for all medical services rendered, totally Ug.shs 200 (US$ 0.08) for outpatient care and Ug.shs 2000 (US$ 0.83) for inpatient care.

Program history: 

NCBHIS was started by Dr. Albert Beekes through the Kabale catholic diocesan coordination office. The scheme was initially provider-based with 3335 members, but changed to community ownership in 2003 and registered as a member of Uganda Community Based Health Financing Association (UCBHFA) in 2006. It operates in 3 sub counties with a coordinating centre at Nyamwegabira Health Centre 3 run by registered trustees of the Kabale Diocese.
