Pastoral da Criança is an organization founded by Dr Zilda Arns and the confederation of Catholic Bishops in Brazil. The organization aims the holistic development of children and promotes the development of their families and communities, without distinction of race, profession, nationality, gender, political and religious affiliations.

Program goals/rationale: 

Through 260,000 volunteers in Brazil, the Pastoral da Criança promotes community actions for health (disease prevention), nutrition, education and citizenship.

Key program components: 

The methodology consists of organizing representatives in communities and training volunteer leaders. These leaders and representatives take charge in guiding and advising 10 to 15 children in their neighborhood on disease prevention, nutrition, education and citizenship. The goal is to empower individuals and make them responsible for their personal and social development.
