Summary:

In response to the need for health care insurance coverage for indigents, GSK partnered with PhilHealth and several local government units to develop and implement the Pinoy Health Pass, a program that is aiming to temporarily help Local Government Units (LGUs) pay their mandated premium share.

Program goals/rationale:

Around 5 million poor families were enrolled in the sponsored program of PhilHealth. However, there are issues like awareness of benefits and lack of sustainable enrollment which deter these poor families to use health insurance benefits.

Key program components:

Under "Pinoy Health Pass," GSK sponsors the health insurance premiums of around 10,000 indigent families for two years. On the third year, the program is envisioned to be self-sustaining.

The Pinoy Health Pass has two approaches: education and social insurance enrollment. For the education component, poor families were taught different concepts of health and sanitation. GSK also developed information-educational materials to facilitate learning. Families were also educated about the benefits of health insurance. GSK has also now paid 15 Million worth of premiums to cover 10,000 poor families in 9 depressed areas of Dinagat and Samar.
