Summary:

Pregnancy Advice and Option Hotline is an initiative that has been implemented by Marie Stopes International Cambodia since 2010 to improve the knowledge and awareness of sexual and reproductive health among Cambodian people, especially the reproductive age groups.

Program goals/rationale:

Sexual and reproductive health is one of the three health priority programs set in the Cambodian Health Strategic Plan 2008-2015. Access to the information of sexual and reproductive health is one of other efficient approaches to prevent sexual and reproductive diseases and illness. Despite remarkable technology evolution, the information on sexual and reproductive health apparently remains inextensively accessible to people, mainly young girls whose right to sexual and reproductive health information is often restricted by contextual cultures and family. However, restricting people from accessing sexual and reproductive health information does not translate that we can prevent people, especially young age groups from engaging in sexual activities. The important thing is that they should be provided with right information on sexual and reproductive health before they are involved in the sexual activities.
The purpose of establishing the Pregnancy Advice and Option Hotline channel is to promote wide access to the information of sexual and reproductive health through an application of telephone line to provide clear information for all in-callers.

Key program components:

Marie Stopes in partnership with Beeline (a popular phone company in Cambodia) establishes a call center for in-callers to seek advices on sexual and reproductive health through free-of-charge call-in. Two MSI-C focal staff are trained on the family planning and reproductive health are assigned to play an alternative role in receiving and responding to the questions and problems related to sexual and reproductive health raised by on-air clients. The on-air pregnancy advice service is operated for in-call from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at 068 700 012 or 090 700 012.

In addition, the two focal MSI-C staff orient and advise the in-callers to seek their health care at qualified public or private public facilities. MSI-C through its staff and networks distributes leaflets containing information of hotline services through the country.

There were 2,237 calls made to the call centre between January and July 2011, an increase of 846% compared to the same period in 2010.
