Pro Mujer’s health program works under the principles of a business model which includes: goals, tools and indicators, first-aid (for health), behavior changing strategies, empowering woman so they can be informed consumers, responsible use of medicine, communitarian services, transfers, impact assessment, financial sustainability, and social and intercultural transformation. A medical office staffed with health personnel exists in each of the organization’s 59 centers.
The health services program takes into account the following:
1. Promotion: Promotion activities are directed towards changing behaviors related to how clients care for their health and the health of their families. For example: Nutrition and hygiene, reproductive health, utilization of health services, and addressing the needs of children.
2. Prevention: Preventative activities include examinations and interventions such as pap smears, family planning methods, weight, blood pressure, and diabetes control, and services related to the health and development of children under the age of 5.
3. Basic first aid: Clients and their families have free daily access to the medical office at their local center, where they can receive high-quality first aid from health professionals. Additionally, clients have access to low-cost medications through this local office. In some regions clients have access to referral services when low-cost secondary or tertiary services are required.
The health services offered are sustainable in part due to the commissions and loan interest generated from clients. In some cases, and for special initiatives, financial support is received from outside sources.
