Summary: 

PSI/PASMO Belize was founded in 1999 to work in HIV/AIDS prevention using a social marketing approach. Located in Belize City with operations throughout the country, PSI/PASMO Belize uses targeted research and innovative social marketing strategies in the areas of BCC and product sales to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and foster sexual and reproductive health in communities throughout Belize. PSI/PASMO Belize strives to direct its resources where they are most needed by locating at-risk and vulnerable populations and developing tailored strategies to reach each respective group.

Key program components: 

PSI/PASMO Belize distributes Vive condoms and lubricants to distributors and points of sale, with a focus on targeting at-risk and vulnerable populations such as female sex workers (FSW), clients of female sex workers, and men who have sex with men (MSM) at such locations as local bars, brothels and motels. PSI/PASMO Belize also promotes condoms generally through the “Got it? Get it!” campaign, which promotes the social norm of consistent condom use and accessibility, while promoting a safe and friendly environment wherever the logo exists. PSI/PASMO Belize conducts BCC activities with at-risk populations including FSWs, clients of FSWs, MSM, and the Garifuna, an ethnic group located in Southern Belize which has shown elevated HIV prevalence rates. Additionally, PSI/PASMO Belize conducts BCC programs targeting local youth, in partnership with local NGOs and faith-based organizations (FBOs). PSI/PASMO Belize provides local NGOs, hospitals, and the Ministry of Health with training to reduce stigma and discrimination in Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT). Using BCC methodologies and activities, PSI/PASMO Belize promotes sexual responsibility—be it condom use, mutual fidelity, or abstinence—among Belizeans.
