Summary:

Rebuilding Health in Rwanda is collaboration project between Canadian Universities and Rwanda. The project's goal is to strengthen Kigali Health Institute's nursing curriculum in the areas of mental health and HIV/AIDS.

Program goals/rationale:

The genocide in Rwanda in 1994 has left a horrific legacy: an impoverished country, damaged infrastructure and social supports, and a greatly increased number of health-related problems. A primary goal of the Rwandan government is to rebuild the health care system and to bring the number of qualified health professionals up to international standards. The University of Western Ontario was invited to partner with the Kigali Health Institute and the National University of Rwanda to help facilitate this goal.

The purpose of the project is to collaboratively rebuild the training programs for health professionals and expand the cadre of health professionals with an emphasis on skills in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS, and mental health.

Key program components:

A key outcome is the increase in the capacity of the Kigali Health Institute to develop and deliver relevant and current educational programming, particularly in areas related to HIV/AIDS and mental health, including trauma. The project will also improve the ability of nursing students and graduates to provide comprehensive and community-based nursing care and counseling to individuals with HIV/AIDS and to women and children experiencing the effects of trauma due to the genocide or sexual violence.

The main project beneficiaries include Kigali Health Institute faculty members and students, hospital matrons and nurses from the Central Hospital of Kigali, as well as nurses in 366 health centres throughout Rwanda and the community members benefiting from their care.

Results are being achieved through the training of all Kigali Health Institute faculty members, the joint development of curriculum for a four-year bachelor of nursing program at the institute and the joint development of context-relevant teaching and learning materials, including the development of cases related to HIV/AIDS and mental health and trauma. In addition, the project provides and improves access to current information and technical resources for the institute.
