Summary: 

Sangini-Tin Mahine Sui is a partial social franchise model that introduced family planning/reproductive health and MNCH services through a local pharmacy network.

Key program components: 

Now, the franchise provides a host of services including a variety of contraceptives, clean delivery kits, labor and delivery services, emergency obstetric care, and diarrheal disease treatment.

The social franchising of Sangini has now been expanded to 74 of 75 districts, and the total number of franchising outlets has reached 3,072, while sales went beyond 460,000 vials in the year 2009.

Sangini is planning on expanding the Misoprostol distribution to five additional districts in hilly, hard-to-reach region, in the coming fiscal year.

Program history: 

In 1994, with USAID support, Nepal CRS Company introduced social franchising of injectable contraceptives in Kathmandu Valley through a network of pharmacies under a the "Sangini-Tin Mahine Sui" brand. In the first year, Sangini was introduced through 50 trained and certified services providers (paramedics) in selected medical ships of Kathmandu Valley.
