The School Health Program of `School Health Annual Report Programme (SHARP)’ is a multi-location, scientifically planned health program for school children, implemented in collaboration with public and private school managements. The school health program is managed under the guidance of medical experts, sociologists, educationists, psychologists and nutritional specialists. SHARP was started in July, 1998 with participation from a sample of schools of Delhi. The programme is currently operational all over India with projects in the public and private schools of Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and various towns of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttranchal.
During the period 1998-2003, the programme covered 1.2 million school going students at about 3186 schools. Besides school based programmes, the organization also has community and internet based projects to reach more school-going children.
Through their school-based, pre-planned health check-ups, they identify health-related problems amongst children and refer them to necessary medical care services. They currently have an over-300 network of hospitals that provide diagnosis, treatment labs and in-patient beds for treatment of referred children. They also have tie-ups with organizations that provide nutritional assistance (for e.g. milk supplementation), counseling etc. They undertake health education and counseling at schools. They provide annual health reports of the children to the school. Parents/ wards of the children concerned can also access their child's health record online. SHARP’s school-based healthcare programme is unique in being the first programme in India to computerize and place health records of thousands of children on the internet.
They have received numerous awards (including the latest Global Dairy Innovation Award, Athens) for various aspects of their school health program and are also on the forefront of applying information and communication technology to reach healthcare to school going children and their families in India.
