Summary:

Selamatkan Ibu is a pro-bono program that aims to increase awareness on maternal health issues at no cost to the community through creative social campaigns and counseling.

Key program components:

Selamatkan Ibu is a part of community response on safe motherhood issues with a focus on raising awareness and advocacy movement at the ground level. It was founded on June 1st 2010 and initiated by several young medical and information technology professionals who shared common interests in reaching the 5th MDG to decrease maternal death. Maternal mortality rates in Indonesia remain high. Selamatkan Ibu believes that it is essential to continue to inform the community on the importance of maternal health issues and the concrete actions that contribute in reducing maternal death in Indonesia.

The program mobilizes volunteers from various backgrounds and health professionals to implement their projects. This movement has already generated thousands of followers including several public figures using social media networks. Through the social network tools, such as Facebook and Twitter, the program provides live counseling to the community from various demographic and socio-economic levels on emerging maternal health issues. On the 22nd of every month, Selamatkan Ibu tweets the slogan “Selamatkan Ibu Selamatkan Bangsa” to highlight the importance of community awareness on safe motherhood. The topics include contraceptive methods and major factors that may contribute to fatalities during pregnancy.

In addition to advocacy through social media, Selamatkan Ibu also conducts social campaign events at the grass-root level on safe motherhood issues and preventive maternal health care. These events include community education, discussions with experts, and free antenatal check-ups. The program is currently reaching the community in Jakarta and expanding to include the rural areas in Sulawesi.
