Summary:

Marie Stopes Society (MSS) Pakistan has pioneered an online counselling service on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) for the Pakistani youth. The website provides online counseling, information and referrals on SRH matters through youth-friendly health professionals.

Program goals/rationale:

More often than not, adolescents from affluent Pakistani families are unable to access the relevant information about their SRH. They may have access to educational institutions, the internet and books, but the culture in which they find themselves does not encourage discussions about sex and reproductive health. As a result, issues may be left unanswered and unaddressed, which is where the new MSS website comes in. The site strives to take the awkwardness out of SRH matters by turning learning into an interactive, educational experience. It aims to help young people deal with the health matters that matter.

Key program components:

The website is available in two languages (English plus Urdu) and provides reliable and factual information on a range of topics from stress management and peer pressure right through to sexuality and rape. Pakistani youth can also use the website to email a health professional for advice on SRH matters. One psychologist and one doctor, who work on a consultant basis, respond to online queries. This service is free to the public.

Another initiative of MSS is a toll-free service helpline (0800 22333) that is reachable from anywhere in the country. Anyone with access to a telephone can call the MSS toll free number for counseling and referrals.
