Summary:

This program promotes HIV/AIDS prevention programs at the community level. This is done through community sensitization about the disease and addressing the stigma and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS.

Program goals/rationale:

The goal of this program is to provide information and education to communities so as to prevent the further spread of HIV. Additionally, the program hopes to mitigate the personal and community impact of the epidemic through awareness campaigns and the provision of quality medical care and counseling services to the infected and affected population.

Key program components:

St. Francis Health Care Services provides primary health care treatment for all HIV/AIDS opportunistic diseases, and putative services to grounded AIDS patients through home-based care program. In addition, the medical department is also equipped with a 24-hour standby ambulance for emergency services.

St. Francis Health Care Services carries out HIV/AIDS awareness through activities such as drama, song, and dance by a group composed of PHA (people having AIDS). Additionally, radio talk shows, running of Jingos advertisements on the local FM radio stations and newspapers are also used to spread awareness. Along with this media campaign, the project implements community visits, workshops and any other forums campaigning for abstinence from sex, promoting proper use of condoms, encouragement for people to go for voluntary counseling and testing (which is done daily at the medical center and once a week in community outreaches). St. Francis Health Care Services also uses a mobile van to reach out to the less privileged rural communities, disseminating information regarding HIV/AIDS.
