Swasth health centers are urban based for-profit primary health centers.

Program goals/rationale:

The objective is to provide comprehensive healthcare for the poor including insurance and health services.

Key program components:

The health centers are located in low income housing areas (e.g. Slums, SRA buildings) acting as the first point of call for all health related matters for the community. The health center will offer the following services:

  • Doctor Consultation: A primary care physician (PCP) will be available at the center for 8 hrs every day (900-1300 hrs and 1700-2100 hrs). In addition, the following specialities - padeatrician, gynaecologist and MD Physician - will visit the center once in 2 weeks on pre-fixed dates and times. Others like general surgeon, Orthopaedist, opthalmologist, etc. will visit on a need basis. The consultations will be available at market price to non-members and 50% discount to members.

  • Diagnostics and tests: Basic diagnostic tests through strips (e.g. Malaria, pregnancy, blood sugar level). The center will tie up with nearby diagnostic centers for tests like X-Ray, Ultra Sound and act as a blood collection center for more advanced blood tests (e.g. Lipid profile). The tests will be available at a discount of 30% at the center and at the tied-up labs

  • Treatment - Drugs, consumables and day care: Primary-care and emergency-care medications and consummables will be available at the center. 3 beds will be available at the center to provide basic day care facility in case the patient needs to be provided with medication like IV fluids or kept under observation. The medications and consummables at the center will be available at 30% discount to the MRP. Additionally, partnerships have been made with select nursing homes/hospitals to provide quality secondary and tertiary care.

  • Preventive - Promotive health: The center will also spread knowledge and awareness about good healthy practices, e.g. Use of safe drinking water, reduction of stress for hypertension management. Low cost options for products which promote good health, hygiene and sanitation will be available at the center to improve access to these products, e.g. Chlorine tablets, sanitary napkins, iron tablets.

Program history:

The founders of Swasth - Sundeep Kapila and Ankur Pegu wanted to provide comprehensive health cover for the poor - health finance and health services. Together with the local NGO they applied for a grant from ILO to pilot a microinsurance product for inpatient and out patient services. The grant was for three years and were to cover 60000 lives. Soon they realized that the bandwidth of the local organization was not enough and not high on their priority. So they shifted based to Mumbai in 2011. The idea is to initiate health care delivery and then include health insurance product too.
