The Tanzanian National Social Security fund was started in 1997 to replace the National Provident Fund and to compliment the National Health Insurance Fund.

The goal is to enroll 85% of employees in the informal sector and 85% of individuals living in rural areas.

The scheme covers outpatient services including consultations, basic and specialized investigations, simple and specialized procedures, drugs in the National Drug List, and referrals to higher level and special hospitals. Inpatient services include admission to the hospital, consultations, simple and specialized procedures, drugs in the National Drug List, and referrals to higher level and specialized hospitals.
