Summary:

TexTB is a supply information system which allows rural health workers to order TB drugs using SMS.

Program goals/rationale:

The TexTB program aims to address one of the components of TB control, that is, improved management and supply of quality anti-TB drugs to prevent wastage and expiry of TB drugs at the rural level.

The Philippines ranks as the 9th highest burden country of TB in the world. TB cases are found among Filipinos aged 15-54 and high TB prevalence has been recorded in low-performing provinces throughout the country. Despite the various programs promoted by the government and the private sector, much is still to be done to reduce TB prevalence and mortality.

Key program components:

The central tenet of TexTB is: treatment is prevention. Current first-line drugs are effective against normal TB, but require efficient administration and patient adherence to drugs. Patients may attempt to procure the next drug installment but encounter a drug stock is out, especially in rural areas. TexTB employs mobile technology that is expected to mitigate this problem.

Program history:

USAID initiated the TexTB program in partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress in 2009.
